The Paper World from the Han Dynasty to the Present Day 剪纸诞生于汉代，兴盛于唐宋，一张薄纸、一把剪刀，剪出婚丧嫁娶的礼俗、岁时节令的祈愿，更剪出中国人“天人合一”的哲学观。北方剪纸粗犷豪放，南方剪纸细腻婉约，阜阳剪纸则融合南北之长，以“原生态”技法著称，刀随心动，形神兼备。
The Paper World from the Han Dynasty to the Present Day Paper-cutting was born in the Han Dynasty and flourished in the Tang and Song Dynasties. With just a thin sheet of paper and a pair of scissors, it has cut out the rituals of weddings, funerals, and marriages, the wishes of seasonal festivals, and even the Chinese philosophy of "harmony between man and nature." Paper-cutting in northern China is bold and unconstrained, while that in southern China is delicate and graceful. Fuyang paper-cutting, however, integrates the strengths of both north and south, renowned for its "original ecological" techniques—where the scissors move with the heart, achieving both form and spirit.

Zhang Yan, a master of paper-cutting, uses scissors as her brush and red paper as her scroll to write the legend of China's intangible cultural heritage. She is not only a representative inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage at the provincial level in Anhui Province but also holds multiple positions. She serves as the Secretary-General of the Paper-Cutting Association in Yingzhou District, Fuyang City, a member of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Vocational Education Special Committee of the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Association, and has even been awarded the title of "China-Germany Folk Culture and Art Exchange Ambassador" by Germany.

Zhang Yan's paper-cutting represents the ultimate "art of subtraction"— "Predominantly cutting, supplemented by engraving, completed in one smooth motion." She rejects the constraints of drafting, pursuing a free realm where "the design resides in the heart, and the scissors move with the mind." This "original ecological" technique endows her works with both the boldness of northern paper-cutting and the delicacy of southern paper-cutting, forming a unique "Zhang-style."
荣誉等身：《原祖系列》获全国剪纸新作展一等奖，《生命树》获安徽省工艺美术博览会金奖；
国际认可：作品被韩国、美国、德国等机构收藏，2018年《连年有余》成为德国迪特福特市“镇市之宝”；
A Body of Honors: The 《Ancestor Series》 won the first prize at the National Paper-Cutting New Works Exhibition. 《Tree of Life》 won the Gold Award at the Anhui Provincial Arts and Crafts Expo.
International Recognition: Her works have been collected by institutions in South Korea, the United States, Germany, and other countries. In 2018, 《Surplus Year after Year》 became the "Treasure of the Town" in Dietfurt, Germany.

She was amazed by the master's skills: scissors served as a brush, sketching the universe at the beginning of chaos on red paper, and the ancient craftsmanship unexpectedly matched modern abstract aesthetics so well, which made her see the hope of breaking the deadlock for intangible cultural heritage.
